Securing Your Home During an Economic Meltdown

If you haven’t noticed, we’re in the midst of a recession – and like all the other times when the economy has taken a dive, crime rates go up. Although spending money on alarm systems may not seem like the highest priority in a time when people are trying to be as economical as possible, you might want to ask yourself if you could handle losing $2,000 right now. Why $2,000? Because that’s the average amount of money that is lost during a burglary these days. Even if you assume that your home will be burglarized within the next year and view the $2,000 as an opportunity cost for an alarm system, most systems will still run you over that amount within a year of service. Inflation Fears Boost Mortgage Rates

Mortgage rates ticked upward this week, nudged by higher-than-expected inflation data that drove up the cost of borrowing.

Average rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages rose to 4.81 percent this week, according to the weekly Freddie Mac rate survey, up from 4.76 percent previously. Rates on 15-year fixed rate loans increased to 4.04 percent, up from 3.97 percent last week.   Initial interest rates on adjustable rate mortgages rose as well, with 5-year Treasury Indexed ARMs rising to 3.62 percent, up from 3.57 percent previously.   Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac chief economist, attributed the rise in part to last week’s release of higher-than-expected inflation figures for February. Credit Unions are Still a Great Bargain in the Anti-Bank Era

Credit Unions are Still a Great Bargain in the Anti-Bank Era

Banks have a long way to go before they will restore consumer confidence and high customer satisfaction ratings. But traditional credit unions are still getting stellar reviews because they are affordable, customer-oriented, and offer a healthy variety of financial products including mortgages, credit cards, checking accounts, and auto loans.

Get a car loan with an interest rate of as little as 3.75 percent, for example, if you are a member of the Pacific Postal Credit Union. If you’re in the armed forces you and your immediate family members can get super rates on home equity loans through military credit unions, and if you work in any government agency there is a credit union ready to cater to your needs. ANZ Chief Says Lender Will Not Be Drawn Into Bidding Wars For Assets

Mike Smith, chief executive of Australian banking major says that despite the lenders increased appetite for acquisition, ANZ has no intention of being drawn into bidding wars for any assets.

Mr. Smith believes that ANZ is well positioned to take advantage of an increasing number of European lenders who are gearing up to divest assets as they seek to raise capital to meet stricter prudential and regulation requirements.

In the recent past ANZ has twice been outbid, first in the auction process for the Indian branch network of Royal Bank of Scotland, and later in a failed bid to acquire Korea Exchange Bank.

Why silver price is going up – supply, demand and global events

By now, the US mint has sold approximately 11,750,000 2011 1-ounce Silver Eagles. However, its production of Silver Eagles has dropped over the past several weeks and the Royal Canadian Mint is now about 4 weeks behind on its production of silver Maple Leafs. The demand for the Maple Leaf Dollar is still not as robust compare to that of American Eagle but it is picking up. Meanwhile on supply side of the equation, scrap silver pours into refineries from everywhere in astonishing amounts with everyone trying to make a quick profit.
